History Mysteries, “Elusive or Extinct”

By Lynn Marie Allen

Did you know the Tasmanian Tiger is not, in fact, a tiger? The Tiger is closely related to an anteater. The last known Tiger died in captivity in 1936. The Tasmanian Tiger was a marsupial with a pouch in its belly for its young, and male Tasmanian Tigers also had the pouch. However, the male’s pouch was self-preservation to cover its testicles rather than incubate the offspring. The pouch for offspring uniquely classifies the animal alongside other animals, such as kangaroos, wallabies, and koala bears. The Tiger was nocturnal and would hunt at night. While the animal, by appearances, looked vicious, it was extremely shy and, similarly to wallabee’s, can become depressed, go into shock, and die very suddenly.

A growing group of people believes strongly the Tiger to preserve itself became more elusive. The group offers wild cash rewards to produce living proof of the Tiger. Some factors that identify the animal may be more inclined to support extinction. The animal had a very weak bite and was slow and clumsy, and the Tiger hopped when it felt threatened or the need to escape. Scientists hope to bring the animal back to life using DNA technology. As always, there is so much more to every story! Find it! Be sure to stop by and share with me what you uncover! #historymysteries
