Well, ladies and gents, let me introduce myself without further ado. A confessed, professed, and all-things jazzy star wars nerd! And what the heck could be better because don’t all things sparkle in the world of Jedi masters! I am a Wookie fanatic, a lover of all things Ewok, and a fan-girl of Yoda, and while it might surprise you, it might not. We can spend hours also discussing Darth. There cannot be light without dark. Anakin Skywalker went to the dark side when falsely told that he had killed Padme and his unborn children, Luke and Leia. It destroyed all that was left of his soul. He has redeeming moments, and I will leave you to discover those treasures to get out there and find a little gem for yourself! Take an otherworldly adventure from the comfort of your couch! So that being said I have a collection of all things Star Wars!

“The place where light and dark begin to touch is where miracles arise!” Robert Johnson

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that!” Martin Luther King Jr.

“Maybe… you have to know the darkness before you can appreciate the light!” Madeline L’Engle

History Mysteries at the Museum,  “Decoration Day, & the Bruning Barn”

Written by Lynn Allen, Executive Director/Curator Brown County Historical Society

This weekend is Memorial Day or Decoration Day if we step back in time or our history! May 26-27, 2023, is the Hiawatha Community Foundation Give Back to Move Forward fundraiser. For those of you who do not recall the history of Decoration Day, people decorated the gravestones to celebrate and mourn loved ones no longer with us. Decoration Day sprang to life to honor people who gave their lives protecting ours and our freedoms, many of which we still enjoy! The first officially recognized Decoration Day included a speech by James Garfield at Arlington Cemetery, where more than five thousand people attended, and the participants decorated twenty thousand civil war soldiers’ graves. If you wonder about the Civil War’s loss of life, more than 600,000 Americans died. Still later in our history, Franklin Delano Roosevelt said, “Those who have long enjoyed such privileges as we enjoy forget in time that men have died to win them.” Roosevelt paid tribute to honor all fallen in service. The service applies to all circumstances and all human life. We can count ourselves blessed for those who valiantly defend our freedom. If you are even left to wonder, we are the “those” he is speaking of. Many towns and histories claim to hold the accolade of the “first” Decoration Day. In this instance, every community and individual should be given the honor associated with remembering and preserving our history for future generations. As always, there is so much more to every incredible story! Find it! Be sure to stop by and share with me what you uncover!

Brown County Historical Society is still working hard to complete our goals at the Bruning Barn! Our GBMF goals include tables and chairs for the Bruning Barn, a catering warmer, gravel, walking paths, lighting, adequate parking space, a silo for future wedding backdrops, and much more. In previous years, GBMF funds were utilized on the Windmill Lane Projects!

History Mysteries, Treasures Revisited

Written by Lynn Marie Allen

As usual, on a journey exploring all things history this morning. I am always amazed by the incredible contributions of people in the community of Brown County. Recently, a community member shared gems from their treasure chest. In the first clip, I came across an announcement; Brigadier General Charles Henry Browne was mentioned. I am amazed at Browne’s contributions to Brown County and, on a much larger scale, to the entire nation. Now, Browne was involved in the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps), basically a version of unemployment for males exclusively during the Great Depression. Does anyone else ponder when writing or hearing “The Great Depression”? I believe very little was “great” about this period in time. The Depression resulted in many projects that benefited humanity. Now, back to Browne, who wrote for the newspaper in Horton. Browne was nephew to Ewing Herbert (I guess the newspaper thing was kind of in their genes). Browne wrote a book, “What Horton Boys Did for the War!”  Browne is responsible for the contribution of Armorys in communities and across the nation! My article today, I did not intend to be entirely about Charles Henry Browne and his contributions, but they are worth bragging about! Browne also appears to be a good friend to many, as reflected by the treasures pulled out of a family treasure chest and shared with me recently. Stay tuned as further developments of this story continue to unfold. Six men in the uniformed men photograph are from left to right Lt. Colonel Browne, Lt. Colonel Barshfield, Major Smith, Captain Reigle, Captain Vining, and Captain Domingo. As always, this is only a tiny piece of the story; get out there and find the rest of the story! Be sure to stop by and share with me what you uncover! #HistoryMysteries

Brown County Historical Society is working hard to finish the Bruning Barn and make it an incredible venue location for many future generations to enjoy. Bruning Barn is the focal point of our Give Back to Move Forward Project for the 2023 Fund! The GBMF project includes tables and chairs for the venue location, a warmer for catering, gravel and work for parking, a silo for future wedding backdrops, and much more. We hope you are as excited as we are to finish this incredible project. The board used previous years’ GBMF funds to assist in funding the newly finished windmill building collection located at the AG Museum, which will house a collection of at least 43 windmills. The funds were used to emphasize all things windmill at the AG museum, and we hope you will be stopping by soon to appreciate some of the completed projects.

History Mysteries, Paying It Forward

Written by Lynn Marie Allen

As usual, off on my journey to explore all things history and sometimes you get lucky, and history or “their story” shows up for you. Today, I had the pleasure of giving a field trip tour to Nemaha Central School fifth graders. The students consisted of approximately forty students, and their mission and journey to Brown County began with something I think you will agree was fantast! Not only were they stopping by for a field trip, their earlier destination included the Brown County Humane Society, where the students could spend time socializing with the animals and donate the items they raised as part of their “Pay It Forward Project!” When their teacher shared this story with me, I knew this was a project all my fellow history investigators had to hear about! The students, in their collaborative effort, brought food, toys, blankets, trash bags, Clorox, detergent, and so much more. What an incredible community service project. And what a fantastic way to pay it forward. As always, this is only a tiny piece of the story; get out there and find the rest of the story! Be sure to stop by and share with me what you uncover! #HistoryMysteries

PS. Thank you Miss Holthaus for sharing your forty students with me and for making Brown County Historical Society Ag Museum and Windmill Lane for your field trip destination.

Unzipped

Photo by JINU JOSEPH on Pexels.com

Unzip the hours, the seconds, and the days; unzip the warmth scattered in the sun’s rays. Unzip each and every memory,

Unzip my heart, Unzip, my soul, unzip the thousands of thoughts that fill my mind, unzip the wishes that keep me strong. Unzip the wave of emotions that piece me back together when it feels overwhelming to me. Unzip the flood of emotions in waves of thoughts and desires for the life I hope to be a part of the building! Dreaming of the most perfect world with a lot less distance, to be fairly specific, 7578 miles! In that perfect world that unites you and I! Allowing us to share the same postal code! Unzip the million billion thoughts and desires. Unzip the love whispered in the wind! Unzip the love that quietly pitter-patters in the rain!

Unravel all the mysteries and complexities and unravel the passion ignited from within my soul! I wish you could see inside my heart and feel all the inspiration from within my soul! Each and every landscape of words, you did that to me!  At the beginning and end of the day, and all the time and space in between, you are the infinite. You mean everything to me!

Me tumhara deewana hoon Umairi! Mujhe tumse ishq hai. Jab se tumhe dekha hai sab bhool gaya hoon. Baqi zindagi mere sath raho. Tum ne meri zindagi ko khoobsoorat bana dia. Wo bohot khoobsaarat hai!

The Quote

Daily writing prompt
Do you have a quote you live your life by or think of often?

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take but by the moments that take our breath away.

Think about that for a bit! Pretty powerful!

Holiday

Daily writing prompt
What is your favorite holiday? Why is it your favorite?
Photo by Azeen Shah on Pexels.com

I am absolutely not picky! I love all holidays; I love the histories I get to go geek out on and share with everyone! Season, ask me my favorite season … it’s fall! I will tell you why. The world lights up in these vibrant colors that, to be honest, fall takes my breath away. I appreciate all things. I try to anyway! I love the new smells of fall when people chop wood, the smells of that wood in the fireplace or stove. The sounds of the crackles, what a delight! I love the sound of the leaves as they crunch underfoot. I love the delightful colors! But I am an absolute nerdy nerd. I adore it when my husband brings me coffee, for the reasons he brought them more for the delicious aromas. I won’t be picky. It can be a cup of tea as well. I am the easiest girl to impress; give me a truck (it doesn’t have to be new). I want it to be roomy, though. I love 10-ply plus tires; holy crap, now that will rev up this girl’s engine! I love Levi’s boyfriend sweaters, any sweater, really. I adore coffee (did I say that already). I love journals and pens and cute purses. I love decorating my house and weekend projects and my puppies! I love all things star wars. You could give me a delightful mini log cabin or cottage, and I would be surrounded in utter bliss; I don’t need a mansion! I need to feel connections and love! I don’t need mountains of money, just comfort!

My Wish

Daily writing prompt
Write about a time when you didn’t take action but wish you had. What would you do differently?

My wish, well naturally, I would hope to not waste time and go grab my dreams by the horns and start chasing them earlier! I love writing, I always have, but I wrote on notebooks, scraps of paper, in journals, on envelopes anything I could get my hands on. I wrote an entire novel in this adorable notebook. I still have it, the coolest shit! Maybe someday someone will want to buy that notebook for a dream of their own. My wish… my wish is the same one I have always had. My children usually ask me … mom what do you want… the answer is. “WORLD PEACE!” PS: little miffed. I am still waiting on the delivery of said gift! The long and short of this story is that I want people to get up and not be greedy power hungry junkies because if you destroy things, guess what? NONE OF US ARE GONNA GET TO CONTINUE TO APPRECIATE WHAT WE HAVE!

So… little thing. Update on wishes, I have applied for a fellowship or will submit my documents to the fellowship; if awarded, I would get a stipend. So, my wish is generally good vibes to be awarded. I have so many dreams for this fellowship! So here’s to dreams. I also wouldn’t mind at all a perfect world where people stop putting up road blocks! See, I don’t believe we should live in a world where we judge people on the basis of color or country. One world, one race, one opportunity, one life, and as many dreams as you can think up. Be a little more “Tinkerbell” and scatter that pixie dust like its confetti!

Risks

Daily writing prompt
Describe a risk you took that you do not regret.

Photo by Shukhrat Umarov on Pexels.com

Singularly the best risk I have ever taken! I would make it my permanent residence even if that was an opportunity! Life and love are opportunities, the best opportunity you will ever have! Dubai, the most peaceful, utterly divine 9 days of my life! Short of the Priceline airline ticket mishap, you don’t need to ask me twice if someone provides tickets. I am on my way! Life every day is waking up 8,778 miles from my heart! Well, that is seriously gonna suck today and every day! I dream of a perfect world where the distance of 8,778 miles is eliminated and the entire world has a different landscape. Don’t get me wrong, I love where I live and am not prejudiced; I deeply appreciate the entire world. Life people, open your freaking eyes, take a look around and realize holy shit! This is ours! We get this little piece of perfection, and we are so busy spending our time offended, entitled asshats. Take a look at this marvelous gift! We have the glorious opportunity to explore! We only get one chance at it. Mine is going to be surrounded by a man that I love! I have countless frustrations, and I try to keep them bottled inside my brain because my frustrations seem to be a whole lot less important than the ones he has to endure daily. Granted, they do spill over and fall out of my face more often than I would ever like to admit. I have to be the strength daily; some days are harder than others. Not gonna sugar coat it for anyone!

Nerves….Nervous… Nervous Nelly

Daily writing prompt
What makes you nervous?

Photo by Vie Studio on Pexels.com

There are probably a million and one things that scare me. So the list could go on for literally days. I fear the day I walk in, and my mother has passed away. I am scared that the pain controls her life and has robbed her of her happiness! I fear that one day, I might have to call 911 for my son Zachary again and worry that they will arrive in time. I will worry that my precious Benny and JuJu Bean will be there when it happens, and the scars of what they witness will be immeasurable to describe or heal. I am scared every day, literally. I am afraid that one day I won’t be able to fight the pain of years where in one long-term relationship, the man slept around, did drugs, and called me a whore, fat, and ugly daily, was abusive in ways impossible to even begin to put into words, so the mirror is NOT my best friend.

It has taken years not to believe the words, and to be honest, every day, I avoid the mirror because of those words and the scars they left. In my second relationship, the man was a severe porn addict. Now let me tell you, they say it’s not a problem, but it is. There were so many years he preferred his porn. Let’s be perfectly honest; the man was not kind and liked his porn, stating the very obvious exceptionally lightly. He slept in another bed the entire time, making excuses. Let’s be perfectly honest here! He preferred porn and had no intention of being intimate with me, and his personal parts were mechanically unable to work unless it was PORN! I fucking hate PORN! The scars there are much more profound.

In both relationships, I was dutiful, kind, caring, considerate, and obedient, and I took care of everything. I worked all day, taking my adopted daughter to work with me. I took jobs where I was present for my children. I went nowhere without my children; this is how I want it. Cooked, cleaned, worked, and cared for the children!

What makes me nervous is that the monster always comes out! I am profoundly in love, but I wait. I am always giving, considerate, and kind; the world is only ready to gobble up loving, generous, and sensitive people! So note to air breathers consider this, love given freely is a gift, a choice. Don’t be an asshat and take this gift for granted.
